Key Highlights:

No $10 Maryland Sticker Needed
That sticker is only for large, federally documented vessels (typically over 5 net tons). Most recreational boaters — including those registered in West Virginia or other states — don’t need it if their boat isn’t federally documented.

Follow Your State’s Rules
Boating laws depend on where your boat is registered and your state’s operator age and certification rules:

  • West Virginia boaters:

    • Born before 1986: No boater safety course needed

    • Born after 1986: Must have WV boater safety card

  • Maryland/PA residents: Must comply with your home state’s rules when boating in MD/PA waters.

Potomac River Jurisdiction Simplified
Though Maryland technically owns the Potomac up to the WV shoreline, you only need to follow your home state’s boating rules when launching from West Virginia.

If your boat is registered in WV and you meet WV’s age and certification requirements, you’re clear to boat on the Potomacno Maryland sticker or extra steps required.
